Get outdoors in 2014!

You are invited to ‘take the train for a walk !’

Organised by the Penistone Line Partnership (PLP), these walks are promoted by the RAMBLERS’ ASSOCIATION to encourage use of the train service to visit some of South & West Yorkshire’s finest countryside. Walks also take place in North Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Join us for an enjoyable day out – all are welcome ! Walks are free but fares apply.
Bring along a flask and sandwiches.
Suitable footwear and clothing are recommended.        

Walks are at an easy pace.
Take care, walk safe, beware of traffic: walks are carefully planned but you are responsible for your own safety. Free car parking at SAXILBY and MEADOWHALL.


Health Note: Walking is good for you! Regular walking can help improve your health and has been described as ‘most nearest to perfect exercise’ - it’s sociable and great fun too !

– The Green City !

Sheffield is reputed to be the greenest city in England. Well, check part of it today. The route will take us through parks and woods and some hidden places to Ecclesfield. Returning via Wooley Wood. (incl. bus opt outs)

Start: 10.20am at Meadowhall (Platform 4 top of steps)
Finish: Meadowhall
Distance:  9 miles.

 – A Long Lost Barnsley Castle !

An interesting circular walk through varied terrain via the Dearne Valley, Cudworth, Carlton, Monk Bretton returning to Barnsley's brilliant transport Interchange.

Finish: Barnsley.  
Distance:  10 miles.

– Don Your Boots !

'Don' your boots for a walk from Mexborough to Doncaster following the river where several disused railway lines are encountered.

Start: 9.55am at Mexborough  
Finish: Doncaster
Distance: 10 miles.

- Valentine's Day Plus One !

Lengthening daylight hours give us some leeway as we follow the Sheffield - Rotherham boundary along the valley of the Rother. Linking woodland , country parks and washlands we duck under the M1 to finish adjacent to a restored colliery site. (shorter option at 4½ miles)

Finish: Kiveton Bridge

 – Idling Our Time Away !

A watery theme today as we follow part of the Cuckoo Way beside the Chesterfield Canal to Hayton then through the spectacular wetland site of the Idle Valley Nature Reserve.

 - There's No Snow On D'em D'ar Hills!

A circular walk across walled enclosures to Dyson Gate. Lanes and paths lead us to Hunshelf Bank and Tin Mill Rother. Holly Lane takes the group to Green Moor with a descent to Old Mill Lane. Oxspring beckons with Willow Bridge, Spring Vale and back to Penistone station.

Our walk today is via Deffer Wood, Heald Head, South Lane, Warren Royd and Blacker Dam on lanes, paths and a few roads.

A route through Thunderbridge, Farnley Tyas, Castle House, Hall Bower,Primrose Hill and along the Narrow Canal to finish at Huddersfield's magnificent station.
