The Penistone Line
The Penistone Line links Huddersfield and Sheffield, and provides opportunities to discover this often forgotten part of Yorkshire.
Starting your journey at Huddersfield, you will immediately notice that Huddersfield Railway Station has a sense of history. A statue of one of the town’s most famous sons, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, stands in the recently modernised St George’s Square. A few yards away, The George Hotel hosts the Rugby League Heritage Centre in the same hotel that the professional code founded in 1895. The station which John Betjeman described as 'The finest façade of any such building in the country' maintains its original charm though, at both ends of the building, parcels offices have been replaced with real ale bars.
Trains regularly leave platform 2 heading to Sheffield. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes and passes through countryside made famous by the TV series, Last of the Summer Wine. There are some great places to visit along the line
