Sheffield is the only city in the country with not one, but two, Iron Age hillforts within it’s boundaries. Today we climb one of them high above the Don Valley which, two thousand years ago, was a frontier of the Roman Empire.

A walk through Penistone’s enclosure system, onto Hunshelf via part of the Barnsley Boundary Walk then onto Finkle Street Wortley, Crane Moor, Hood Green and Silkstone Common.

Following an S-shaped route which twists, turns, rises and falls through rolling countryside on the flanks of the Don Valley, where intimate wooded valleys contrast with open farmland and distant views into the Peak District.

Easter Saturday sees the Penistone Line having it’s first special diesel locomotive-hauled charter for 11 years! Visit the historic destinations of Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford.

these walks are promoted by the Ramblers’ Association to encourage use of the train service to visit some of South & West Yorkshire’s finest countryside. Walks also take place in North Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
